Gutter Repair

The value of having a reliable gutter system on your home is always underestimated. Without a proper functioning gutter system a home can incur serious damage due to weather and other elements. It is imperative to have a good functioning gutter system to avoid problems and costly repairs that could have easily been avoided.

When making needed gutter repairs, always plan ahead so that once the project is started, you are able to complete it. By saying this, I mean that you should have all the needed tools and supplies required to complete the project. Make sure you have a ladder onsite for hard to reach areas on the roof. Always make sure your ladder is safe and secure. It is always best to have a spotter at the bottom of the ladder to help secure it in place.

Before going to get your materials and supplies, you first need to determine the type of gutter and the appropriate screws needed for repair. Aluminum and plastic are the two most common types of gutters. Plastic gutters normally snap into place and are easier to install.

There are several common problems when it comes to your gutter repair:
• The first being keeping them clear of debris, i.e. leaves, twigs, etc… There are a large number of measures that can be taken to prevent this and avoid future problems. Your standard gutter cover can snap into place avoiding future headaches.
• The second most common problem is a loose or damaged gutter. This can be a simple fix, or more complicated. For example, if a loose nail caused the gutters to detach you must figure out whether it was just from standard wear and tear or if the wood fascia behind the gutter is rotting. After determining the problem, you can make the necessary fix. Downspout connections are also problems, if they are not done correctly can have constant leaks and can cause flooding to your foundation/ basement. This can be fixed by ensuring there is a good seal and/or caulking the seals.

The tools needed for a proper gutter repair are as follows:
1. Ladder
2. Hammer
3. Measuring tape
4. Cordless Drill (screw and screwdriver will work)
5. Handsaw (for cutting gutter)
6. Safety Glasses

You always want to lay out the gutter and measure your cuts prior to making the repairs, this will help eliminate human error that will cost you time and money. It allows you to revaluate your decisions.

As I mentioned above, you need to determine the cause of the problem in order to be able to fix it. If you have a loose gutter, remove it and check the fascia behind it to ensure it is not rotten. If not, proceed to reapply the gutter and make sure the screws are strong and secure into the wood fascia.

When you are putting the gutter together, it is always easier and safer to assemble on the ground rather than trying to do so from a ladder or on the roof. Depending on the type of gutter, the gutters either snap into place or are nailed into the fascia. When installing a downspout the pieces will slide into one another followed by drilling in the connecting screws.

A few last things to remember/ reiterate about repairing gutters yourself:
• It is easier than you expect. Always see if it is possible to repair yourself rather than hiring a contractor.
• Safety is always the most important, do not cut corners.
